Clark & Company Limited was based at Shakespeare Foundry in Wolverhampton England and was founded in 1795 by Thomas and Charles Clark. The company grew to be one of the largest iron foundries in Wolverhampton and were pioneering in the manufacture of enamelled cast iron cookware and sanitary wares. The company's product range included thousands of items, both domestic and industrial. T. & C. Clark were pioneers in the use of enamelled cast ironware, after taking out a patent in 1839 guaranteeing their products to be free of lead or arsenic. The company became the largest employer in Wolverhampton employing between 600 to 700 people. The item is significant as it was used as a domestic kitchen item to boil water safely without the concern that the metal may contain lead or arsenic as earlier cooking utensils had. Combustion Demonstration
... at a murder trial in New Zealand, leaving his widow Elizabeth (ne... at a murder trial in New Zealand, leaving his widow Elizabeth (ne ...John Macadam was a Scottish born analytical chemist, medical practitioner and politician. As a student he soon showed a flair for analytical chemistry, and later also studied medicine. He arrived in Melbourne in 1855 to take up an appointment as lecturer in chemistry and natural science at Scotch College, a position he held until 1865. In 1857 Ferdinand von Mueller named the Macadamia nut after him. He officiated as one of two umpires at one of the earliest recorded games of Australian rules football, between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar in 1858. Macadam was appointed government analytical chemist in 1858 and health officer to the City of Melbourne in 1860. He represented Castlemaine in the Legislative Assembly between 1859 and 1864. Appointed secretary of the Royal Society of Victoria in 1860 and vice-president in 1863, he was also the secretary of the exploration committee of the Burke and Wills expedition. When the Medical School of the University of Melbourne opened in 1862 Macadam was appointed lecturer in chemistry. He was a skilled, popular and eloquent lecturer, learned and generous with his knowledge. Sadly, just three years later, and aged only 38, he died at sea on the way to give evidence at a murder trial in New Zealand, leaving his widow Elizabeth (ne Clark), and a son. He was accompanied on that voyage by his assistant, the medical student John Drummond Kirkland, who later became the University?s first Professor of Chemistry. Born in Ireland, John Drummond Kirkland trained as a chemical analyst through apprenticeship in a medical laboratory in Dublin, before migrating to Australia in 1852 and moving to Melbourne in 1855. While still an undergraduate medical student at the University of Melbourne, he was appointed lecturer in chemistry following the sudden death of John Macadam in 1865. Due to the enthusiastic support of his fellow students this temporary role became a permanent appointment the following year. Kirkland continued his studies, graduating in medicine in 1873 and surgery in 1880. His son, John Booth Kirkland, was appointed as his assistant in 1878, later leading to accusations of nepotism. In 1882 John Drummond Kirkland became the University?s first professor of chemistry and metallurgy, continuing until his death in 1885. Today?s researchers use a high performance computing facility named ?Kirkland? after the first Professor of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne. Chemistry was still controlled by the medical school during Kirkland?s career, but became part of the science degree from 1886, along with the appointment of David Orme Masson as professor. Kirkland struggled for University funding to buy new apparatus. To compensate, he bought much from his own personal funds, including analytical chemistry equipment. Chemistry was first taught at Melbourne in the medical school, located in the area now occupied by Physics and the Ian Potter Museum of Art.Demonstration of combustion Mid 19th century, used by McCoy, MacAdam, and Kirkland -

Photograph - J S Irvine Memorial Photograph, David Scaletti, 1999
John S. Irvine was a resident of Peterborough and one of the original trustees of the present golf club. He died in 1999. Rod Calvert's house (on the corner of Blair & Schomberg) was used as the clubhouse, prior to the purchase of the current clubhouse. This photograph is significant for two reasons: it depicts the second hole plus some of the off shore rocks as they were in 1999. Mainly this is significant as John Irvine, along with N. R. Calvert, & P. G. Clark, guaranteed a loan in 1972 for the purchase of the land and building which are now the golf clubhouse. Until the Hall was built, this clubhouse was the meeting point for the community, and continues to be for many events. This photo was donated in his memory and in appreciation for his long service to the Peterborough Golf club24 inch x 40 inch framed photograph of the second hole, Peterborough and a framed photo of John S. IrvinePrinted title, photographers signature and copyright statement on the front. Plaque is inscribed: Donated in memory of John S. Irvine who helped create and loved this course and was a respected long serving member of this club.peterborough, peterborough golf club, golf, golf links, john irvine, rod calvert -

This event is played on the long weekend in January and is very popular as non handicapped players can play. Draw for partners, no handicaps required, and it is a 12 hole event. It is the only time the practice tee is used in an official event, it is used as the first tee and the first becomes the 10th. Souvenir - Fred Moore Wooden Spoon Trophy
The Fred Moore trophy is held on Australia Day long weekend. This trophy commemorates the losers, ie the highest score of the day over 12 holes. It began in 1967, and continues. Believed to be donated by Bill Cumming to honour the effort of the players. The event is a non handicap game, so anyone can play, not necessarily golfers. It is still quite a coveted prize. The names on this trophy are not generally found on any other trophies! 1967 L Gatenby G Irvine, 1968 F McIntosh D Morrison, 1969 R Richmond J Wilson, 1970 S Cumming D Urquhart, 1971 S Wilcocks M Koser, 1972 J Murnane D Urquhart, 1973 a. ... of a middle-aged Clarke. C&N identification. "William (Bill) Clark ..."William (Bill) Clark was engineering manager with Fruehauf tractors, and now starts life as a minister at Kaniva. He'd been in transport engineering for almost 30 years before studying for ordination. The children, both grown up, one married, will remain in Melbourne. Bill told me he enjoys working with people and looks forward to the opportunity to share with lay people who know their community, in communicating toward and with the whole community the love and concern of the gospel. Margaret, his wife, enjoys gardening, crocheting, reading and walking. Bill says his other interests are practical work, including welding." 2017 - retired minister. The two photos show head and shoulders of a middle-aged Clarke.C&N identification.clarke, william, margaret clarke, uniting church minister
